Wood splinters embedded in frozen corn dogs have injured at least five people, prompting Publix to pull State Fair and Jimmy Dean products from stores nationwide. This Class I recall—the most serious level—affects millions of items sold between March and September, with contaminated products potentially sitting in freezers across the Southeast and beyond.
Immediate action is required for products with specific establishment numbers.
The recall targets State Fair corn dogs and Jimmy Dean pancake-and-sausage sticks produced at Hillshire Brands’ Texas facility between March 17 and September 26, 2025. Look for establishment numbers “EST-582” or “P-894” printed on packages, with use-by dates ranging from November 2025 through June 2026. The most commonly purchased items include:
- State Fair Classic Corndog 6-count (GTIN 7106801126)
- Jimmy Dean Pancake and Sausage on a Stick Original 12-count (GTIN 7790033496)
Additional recalled varieties span the full State Fair lineup: beef corn dogs, 16-count classic packages, and Jimmy Dean blueberry pancake-and-sausage sticks. Less common products include specialty corn dogs with jalapeño, turkey, chicken, pork, honey-sweetened, and whole-grain options distributed to food service operations.
A separate contamination issue affects one Florida store location.
Separately, Publix recalled oven-roasted chicken products from one Florida location—the Southgate Shopping Center in Lakeland—due to potential contamination with oven cleaning material. This affects original, lemon pepper, mojo, and Mardi Gras varieties sold before 3 p.m. on September 26. Unlike the nationwide splinter recall, this chicken issue impacts only the single store location.
Don’t eat these products. Throw them away immediately or return them for a full refund. Wood splinters can cause choking, internal injuries, or digestive tract damage requiring emergency medical care. Seek medical attention if you experience persistent pain, difficulty swallowing, or bleeding after consuming these items.
For refunds or questions, contact Publix at 800-242-1227 or Hillshire Brands at 888-747-7611. Store receipts aren’t required for returns, and customers can dispose of products safely by double-bagging them before trash pickup.
“As part of our commitment to food safety, potentially impacted product has been removed from the store shelves,” said Maria Brous, Publix’s director of communications, according to the company’s recall notice. The USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service continues monitoring the situation, with additional recalls possible if more contaminated products surface during the ongoing investigation.
