Around 11am, I met up with friends at Grand Army Plaza to start our food truck journey. We traveled from Park Slope to Williamsburg, the East Village, Union Square, the Flatiron District, West Harlem, the Meatpacking District, the West Village, back to the East Village, SoHo, and finally back to Park Slope. In the end, I spent about 11 hours visiting 12 trucks, leaving me with sore feet but loads of fun.

The Le Gamin truck was in Jersey that day, so I couldn’t try it. A friend had the merguez sandwich earlier in the week and raved about it.

Food Rundown

Green Pirate Juice Truck

Location: Grand Army Plaza @ Prospect Park West

Time: 11am

The Green Pirate Juice Truck

I see this truck often but never considered getting a juice from them. I got The GP Lemonade, with lemon, red apple, and cucumber. The cucumber taste dominated the drink, except for a pleasant twang after the cucumber taste faded. I wanted more balance between the apple and cucumber. Refreshing, but not what I expected.

Wafels and Dinges Truck

Location: 7th Ave & Carroll St

Time: 11:40am

Wafels & Dinges

The new truck had two people working instead of one. I ordered a pre-made wafel with Nutella and strawberries. While tasty, I miss when they served freshly made wafels. This one wasn’t too old, but nothing beats a fresh one.

Rickshaw Dumplings

Location: 7th Ave & Garfield Pl

Time: 11:55am

Rickshaw Dumplings

I’ve never been impressed by Rickshaw Dumplings, and this visit didn’t change my mind. The six veggie dumplings ($6) were chewy with bland filling. The vinegar-based dipping sauce helped but couldn’t save them.

Treats Truck

Location: Union St between 8th Ave & Prospect Park West

Time: 12:20pm

Treats Truck

I ordered the Mexican brownie, rich and chocolatey but needed more cinnamon flavor. Kim Ima, the owner, kindly asked if I wanted a side, center, or corner piece. The corner piece was delicious.

El Diablo Taco Truck

Location: Union Pool, Williamsburg

Time: 1:24pm

El Diablo Taco Truck

The chorizo taco came topped with onions, tomatoes, cheese, cilantro, and a lime wedge. It was salty, fresh, and flavorful. Though I’m not usually a fan of corn tortillas, this one impressed.

Final Thoughts

A tiring but exciting day exploring the city’s food trucks. Next time, I’ll try Van Leeuwen Ice Cream, revisit Cupcake Stop, and sample The Big Gay Ice Cream Truck.

Our Verdict

This food truck adventure was a fun-filled day with a mix of great and disappointing experiences. While some trucks offered delicious and innovative food, others fell short in terms of quality and service. The real highlight was exploring different neighborhoods and meeting various people.
