I Don’t Do Frozen Drinks, But This New Orleans One Changed My Mind

You need to know something about me first.

I hate frozen drinks. The sugary brain freeze disasters. The neon slushies in novelty cups. The whole sticky mess of it.

I walked into Erin Rose with zero expectations. This Irish dive bar sits just off Bourbon Street in the French Quarter — rust-colored building, dark green shutters, sticky floors, cash only. You stick to the floor. You get sweaty elbows pressed against you. You drink from plastic cups.

It’s perfect.

The bartender handed me a Frozen Irish Coffee in a black logo cup. Coffee grounds dusted on top. One sip and I understood why bartenders from around the world make this their first stop during Tales of the Cocktail every July.

This isn’t your typical frozen cocktail.

The drink comes from a soft-serve machine — which means no filler ice watering it down. Local coffee and dairy blended with whiskey, brandy, and coffee liqueur. The exact recipe stays secret, locked down since Jim Monaghan invented it in the 1980s.

It’s cold and creamy without being sweet. You get a caffeine kick with your buzz. The texture lands somewhere between a slushy and soft-serve ice cream.

People drink it for breakfast. For lunch. At 3am. The bar stays open 21 hours a day (10am to 7am), so you can grab one whenever the craving hits.

The 12-ounce cup runs $3.50 during happy hour (10am-2pm) or $4.50 after. The 16-ounce souvenir cup costs $6. Pro tip from the regulars: ask for a float of Jameson on top.

Erin Rose shares space with Killer Poboys in the back. Grab a shrimp po’boy while you’re there. Sit near the open window and watch people stumble down Conti Street. The jukebox plays all the right songs.

I finished my first Frozen Irish Coffee in about eight minutes. Ordered a second. Bought the souvenir cup.

This drink converted me. I’m still not doing Hand Grenades or giant novelty hurricanes. But Erin Rose’s Frozen Irish Coffee? I’ll drink that any time of day.
