There’s a tree-lined stretch of LaGuardia Place which features shops and restaurants that are set back from the street. That’s where I found Rhong Tiam, where I had lunch about a month ago. I had read about their food being spicy and authentic, though having never been to Thailand I’m not sure I’d know authentic Thai food if it ate me.
About Rhong Tiam
Rhong Tiam was established in March 2008 and originally located at 541 LaGuardia Place, between Bleecker & W. 3rd Streets, Greenwich Village, New York City. However, it moved to 87 Second Avenue after the original space was shut down by the Department of Health.
Menu Highlights
My “lunchbox” special ($7) featured drunken noodles with tofu, a small salad, some spring rolls, and a mound of fragrant jasmine rice (surprising, as most places don’t serve rice with noodles). The drunken noodles were very tasty and nicely spicy, thanks to a sprinkle of chile powder over the top of them, and came with a much welcomed wedge of lime, something I wish more Thai restaurants would include.
Other notable dishes include:
- Duck Buns: Made with duck confit and hoi-sin sauce, offering a nice, bright flavor.
- Thai Sausages: Though they can be overcooked, they are a popular choice.
- Moo-Na-Rok (Pork on Fire): Known for its intense chili heat.
- Duck Chu Chee: Served with house-made curry gravy, providing a balanced dish with plenty of heat.
Unique Features
The restaurant offers an excellent value, with meals being reasonably priced. The ambiance is quiet and comfortable, though not particularly memorable.
