Southwest Airlines is restructuring its Rapid Rewards program in 2027, making unlimited Companion Pass a top-tier Platinum benefit — though three Companion Pass trips remain available at an intermediate milestone below Platinum.
For years, one of the savviest moves in budget travel wasn’t hunting for a cheap fare — it was reaching Southwest’s Companion Pass through credit card welcome bonuses. Sign up for the right card at the right moment, stack enough qualifying points, and a companion flies free for up to two years. That strategy closes January 1, 2027. What replaces it is, by Southwest’s own framing, cleaner. It is also considerably harder to reach for most travelers.
The Qualification Logic Just Flipped Completely
Southwest is retiring points-based Companion Pass access in favor of Tier Qualifying Points earned through eligible card spending or qualifying flights — and most credit card bonuses no longer count.
Under the old structure, 135,000 qualifying points — including eligible welcome bonuses — unlocked Companion Pass. Starting in 2027, qualification runs on Tier Qualifying Points (TQPs), earned through eligible dollars spent or qualifying flights flown. Welcome bonuses, referral bonuses, anniversary points, hotel stays, and car rentals no longer contribute toward Companion Pass qualification. Every Rapid Rewards credit card, including Plus and business cards, earns one TQP per eligible dollar spent. To reach unlimited Companion Pass through card spending alone requires $140,000 in annual eligible purchases — a figure that exceeds the median U.S. household income.
Here is what the new structure looks like, according to Southwest’s official program announcement:
- Silver replaces A-List; Gold replaces A-List Preferred; Platinum is the new top tier — effective January 1, 2027.
- Unlimited Companion Pass requires Platinum status: 140,000 TQPs or 100 qualifying one-way flights per calendar year.
- An intermediate milestone at 95,000 TQPs or 75 qualifying one-way flights earns three Companion Pass trips, each covering a one-way or round-trip itinerary for a designated companion.
- Welcome bonuses, referral bonuses, anniversary points, bonus-category spending, and partner activity through hotels and car rentals no longer count toward Companion Pass qualification.
- Companion Pass benefits earned under 2026 rules remain valid through December 31, 2027.
Southwest describes the overhaul as a simpler path to status with additional milestones and faster tier progression for some cardholders. Simpler and better, though, are not the same thing. The previous structure rewarded strategic credit card use. The new one rewards travelers who either fly Southwest with serious frequency or charge at a scale — $140,000 annually — that most leisure travelers will never approach.
Who This Actually Rewards – And What to Do Before 2027
Travelers holding a 2026 Companion Pass are protected through December 31, 2027, but 2026 is the final year the welcome-bonus strategy remains viable.
Companion Pass benefits earned under the 2026 rules remain valid through December 31, 2027, regardless of the restructure. For travelers already holding the pass, that is meaningful protection. For everyone else, the 2026 calendar year represents the last window to use welcome bonuses, stack qualifying points under the existing threshold, and carry that benefit into the new era before the rules change entirely.
Companion Pass is not going away. Southwest confirmed the benefit continues through Platinum status and the intermediate milestone. What has changed is who realistically earns it. Unlimited access is now a top-tier loyalty reward — one that favors frequent flyers and heavy spenders rather than travelers who once reached it through a well-timed airport security-conscious card application.
